When AMD first released the AMD Radeon HD 6950 GPU in 2012 the reference design had 2GB of GDDR5 memory. AMD allows their Add-In-Board (AIB) partners to alter the amount of memory on the card if they want and that is exactly what MSI did on the R6950 Twin Frozr III 1G/OC graphics card that they sent us to review. By reducing the frame buffer on the card they are able to reduce the price and for those that don't need 2GB of memory it should be an interesting card to look at. The AMD Radeon HD 6950 GPU has 1408 stream processors, so you know it will be able to deliver the gaming performance that users demand. Since the AMD Radeon HD 6950 video card has been around for a year and a card we have reviewed multiple times in the past, we'll get right to it and take a look at the MSI R6950 Twin Frozr III 1G/OC.

Looking at the front of the R6950 Twin Frozr III 1G/OC graphics card you'll see a video card that looks nothing like the AMD Radeon HD 6950 reference design, but we know that is what the card is based on. MSI engineers came up with their own PCB design and GPU cooling solution for this card, so it has been designed from the ground up to be more robust. MSI has included Military Class II components on it along with the Twin Frozr III dual-fan cooler and a fan speed switch that allows you to change between two fan profiles. On the custom PCB, MSI beefed up the power design to a 6+2 Phase PWM solution to offer more current output to the GPU. On top of that MSI allows for the voltage adjustment of the GPU, Memory and the PCIe slot with the MSI Afterburner utility. MSI has done a number of things to make this card stand out from the crowd!
The MSI R6950 Twin Frozr III 1G/OC graphics card sports a black and silver color scheme with a hint of red that helps give it an aggressive look. The PCB of the card measures ~9.5" in length and stands at ~4.0" in height. It should be noted that the metal fan shroud extends past the PCB, so the true length of the card is ~10.7" in length and the height of the card up to ~4.3" in height.

One of the main features of the MSI R6950 Twin Frozr III 1G/OC is the Twin Frozr III Heatsink. The cooler has two 80mm 'propeller blade' PWM fans to help keep the GPU and surrounding areas nice and cool. The fan blades have air channels located along the the edge of the fan blades that help increase the surface area. MSI says that this adjustment increased airflow by 20% compared to conventional fan. The GPU cooler also has a large nickel-plated copper heatsink base and five 8mm heat pipes to help to dissipate heat rapidly away from the GPU.

Turning the MSI R6950 Twin Frozr III 1G/OC video card over we don't find too many interesting things as the card doesn't have a back plate or any of the GDDR5 memory chips on the back of the PCB. The serial number sticker is the most important thing that is located on the back of the R6950.

The MSI R6950 Twin Frozr III 1G/OC has a pair of mini-DisplayPort 1.2 connectors, a full size HDMI 1.4a output for 3D video (Blu-ray 3D) support, a dual-link DVI-I and a single-link DVI-I outputs. This AMD Radeon HD 6800/6900 series supports up to six DisplayPort displays by "daisy chaining" them to two DisplayPort outputs.

The Radeon HD 6950 has two CrossFire interconnects and you can link up to four of these cards together for improved performance. The last thing we want to point out in the picture above is that a PCB stiffening bracket (the silver bar on top) is included to help stiffen up the card and keep the PCB from bending due to the weight of the GPU cooler.

The MSI R6950 Twin Frozr III 1G/OC has a fan profile switch along the top edge of the card that allows you to change between performance or silence fan profiles. This is a nice touch and can easily be adjusted without having to install or mess with any software. Our card came set to the performance fan profile and we left it that way.

The MSI R6950 Twin Frozr III 1G/OC video card has the same power requirements and connections as the AMD Radeon HD 6950 reference design. This means that the card has two 6-pin PCIe connectors located along the top of the PCB that need to be hooked up. AMD says that the Radeon HD 6950 requires a 500W or greater power supply with two 75W 6-pin PCIe connectors.
OK, so maybe the 'SSD of Ebony Excellence' title is a more of an artifact of us playing too much Skyrim than how most would refer to the new Samsung 830 Series but it has a nice ring to it and it is an alluring drive. Really, the exterior design is simple but it has an elegance to it when you hold it in your hand that may be due to the 7mm thickness which is a bit exotic in itself. But before we too far down the hands-on part, we should do proper introductions. We kicked off 2011 with a review of Samsung's 470 Series drive which we found to be an extremely capable drive and even followed that up with a long-term usage update report. Again, we found it to be working nearly good as new after months of use and abuse so Samsung did nice work. While that was a great drive, other SSD makers were already ousting their 6Gbps drives onto the market and 3Gbps drives were so 2010. Bring it on!

The 470 series got its name from the sum of the read and write maximum throughputs but we can't say the same about the 830 as the specs from Samsung say it can hit reads of 520MB/s and writes of up to 400MB/s. 920 anyone? So, no fancy story behind the name, at least that we were made aware of. The exterior features a brushed aluminum top cover in satin black and an orange accent in the corner highlighting the drive capacity. The design is not unlike some of their televisions where they have a big market share. Samsung isn't necessarily a big name in SSDs but they've done a good job so far and we'll let out a little spoiler now that they are making huge strides with this drive.

Having a look around back on the exterior, we have a black plastic shell containing the sticker with all of the drive info and legal information. Again, it's not fancy but it does stand out from the majority of generic drive designs.

The packaging is very nice and included to sweeten the pot is full copy of Norton Ghost and a coupon code for the new Batman: Arkham City. Sweet! All that for about $390 online for the 256GB version.

The drive is cradled nicely in a plastic tray and when removed, reveals a hole with a paper tab sticking up to pull out the tray and the underlying contents. Very much like you see on Apple iPods and iPhones.

Included are SATA data and power cables and a chrome-like (tough to see from the picture but very shiny) adapter plate with accompanying screws.

Aside from Norton Ghost, there is another disk that contains the manual and the SSD Magician 3.0 toolbox software that we'll talk a little bit about later.

The EVGA Z68 FTW edition is the top Intel Z68 offering from EVGA. Before we get to far in, I just want to let you know FTW doesn't stand for what you think it does, it's meant to stand for; For The Win. With the performance that EVGA is know for, they could quite possibly do that! The Intel Z68 Express chipset has been around for some time now so we aren't going to dwell to much on it this time around.
The EVGA Z68 FTW (160-SB-E689-K2) is a very feature rich motherboard. One of the first features that is almost painfully obvious is the expansion slots. The Z68 FTW has six PCIe X16 slots and one PCIe X1 slot. EVGA has done away with the nearly out of date PCI slot that we are still seeing on some of the motherboards we have looked at recently. If you're looking to run multiple overclocked graphics cards you could potentially run into a voltage shortage in the PCIe slots, EVGA has equipped the Z68 FTW with a four pin molex plug on the board to supply additional power. The Intel Z68 Express chipset doesn't supply enough PCIe X16 lanes to truly run NVIDIA Tri-SLI technology. To remedy this situation EVGA has implemented a NVIDIA NF200 chip to supply additional PCIe lanes. The NVIDIA NF200 adds an additional 16 lanes to the PCIe architecture.

The EVGA Z68 FTW has a very solid CPU power delivery system, it uses a 12 Phase PWM (Pulse Width Modulator). Using a 12 Phase PWM will supply your Intel Core i5/i7 with very clean variable power switching. EVGA has also implemented their EVGA Vdroop Control. Within the EVGA UEFI BIOS you can choose with Vdroop or without Vdroop. When you set the UEFI BIOS to without Vdroop, what you set your Vcore to inside the BIOS is what you will get inside the operating system. If there is a question about your voltages EVGA has tossed in a few EZ Voltage Read points that you can check your voltages with a multimeter.

Every company that makes an 'enthusiast' motherboard has a utility to go along with it. EVGA uses their ELEET software utility. When you first open the ELEET utility, you see a very CPUz like screen. Here we can see the details on the processor being used, in our test system case an Intel Core i7 2600K. Unlike CPUz though, we are able to overclock the system using the ELEET utility. We are able to tweak the multiplier, Bclk, and voltages. We're able to monitor the various fan speeds, temperatures, and voltages throughout the system. It's quite a nice little utility to play with.
The EVGA Z68 FTW looks like it's going to be a great board, at least on paper. As we take the tour of the EVGA Z68 FTW we will take a look at a few more of the feature on the board. For now let's take a look at the retail packaging and bundle that comes with the EVGA Z68 FTW (160-SB-E689-K2).
Today we start with a little history lesson so indulge us if you will. In the not so distant past when consumer SSDs were in their relative infancy, there were only a handful of controllers on the market. While JMicron, Intel, Samsung and Marvell were pretty much the main players at the time, the Intel controllers arguably garnered the most praise and attention from the reviewer community. As Nate was the first to discover, many of these had performance issues over time and TRIM wasn't even in the consumer vocabulary. It wasn't too long before an upstart named Indilinx came along and quickly became the darling of the SSD world although the Intel drives were still widely held to be the gold standard, so to speak. Ever the pioneers, OCZ was the first to partner with Indilinx and launched their extremely popular Vertex line powered by their Barefoot controller. OCZ sold a ton of these drives and it really was the impetus that helped propel them into the forefront of the consumer SSD market. It wasn't long before others joined in and there were a slew of Indilinx based drives on the market. Along came SandForce (of which OCZ was an early adopter) and Indilinx seemed to fade away with little fanfare.

Fast forward a bit to March of 2011, when it was announced that OCZ would be acquiring Indilinx. At the time, rumors had circulated about OCZ's interest in SandForce so it wasn't completely unexpected but was still a bit surprising. At the time, there was much speculation on would would come of this but OCZ kept much under their hat, so everyone took a wait and see approach. Finally, this month OCZ announced the newest Indilinx controller known as Everest which is featured in their new Octane drives. They sent us over a 512GB beast to bang around on and frankly we were chomping at the bit to see what they cooked up although this article comes out much later than we would have liked due to unforeseen circumstances, so we apologize for keeping our readers waiting.

The Octane drives actually come in two flavors. The Octane with a SATA 6Gbps interface and the Octane S2 with a SATA 3Gpbs interface. The former features orange graphics and 25nm synchronous (faster) NAND and the latter having blue themed graphics with 25nm asynchronous (slower) NAND. This is probably a wise move since many still have older 3Gbps motherboards and care not to fork out extra bills for performance they can't even take advantage of. Each can be purchased in capacities from 128GB up to a monstrous 1TB which is the first such SSD in the 2.5" form factor that we are aware of! The pricing for the 512GB is expected to be around $879.99 MSRP for the 512GB version and the 1TB version pricing has yet to be announced.

OCZ touts the Octane drives as having up to a two times increase in the rated NAND program/ease cycles as a result of their nDurance technology. It employs proprietary algorithms to mitigate wear and maintain performance over the long haul. In contrast to the SandForce controllers, no compression is employed during the write cycle so performance should be consistent regardless of the type of data being written. OCZ also points out that the drive is designed to provide better overall performance on all file sizes rather than a small spectrum.

Gone are the traditional cardboard boxed packaging in favor of plastic blister packs. Thankfully, these are the easy to open ones with locking tabs at the top. No knives or hassle. Included is a warranty and instructions brochure and the familiar 'My SSD is faster than your HDD' sticker. Absent is a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter plate which is no big deal since many cases support 2.5" drives now and they are relatively cheap to purchase. The overall external design of the drive is not unlike that of the other drives OCZ offers with bold graphics, a black plastic shell and brushed aluminum back plate. Let's see what they did differently on the inside.
Case Labs, based in Canoga Park California, was started about a year ago by Jim Keating after frustration with the quality and features available from cases on the market. Jim's father, an aerospace engineer during the space program, started a custom enclosure making business back in 1971 for electronic, military, medical, and industrial applications. So when they needed to build a new workstation for engineering design and image rendering, finding an appropriate case proved to be the most challenging part of the project. The overwhelming majority of cases on the market impose strict design constraints; the choices for mounting hardware and cooling systems are very limited and they wanted a design where the user was able to have almost unlimited modularity and flexibility. While they had the facility to make custom parts on the fly they realized most PC enthusiast do not and figured they could put their talents to use making the ultimate PC case. The goal was to make probably the last case you would ever need to buy.
Building on the success with the M8, Case Labs added to their line up based on user feedback from the enthusiast community. The M10 has the same dimensions as the M8 on the outside but supports a larger mATX - XL-ATX (13.60" x 10.75”) (346mm x 273mm) motherboards where the Magnum M8 supports the more common mATX - ATX/EATX (12.0" x 10.75”) size. The MH10 is deeper than the M8 by 6" where the T10 is taller by 6". Finally the TH10 is both taller and deeper by 6" in each direction. All of these cases are available in powder coated black matte or white gloss inside and out. For more color options Case Labs has teamed up with FTW PC to offer custom powder coated colors for an additional fee of $274.00 for an M8 Case. Currently you can only purchase the Case Labs MAGNUM cases directly from Case Labs (www.caselabs.net) or from FTW PC. There are a few other cases that are in the prototype phase including a more traditional 9" wide single bay case and the "Godzilla" dual motherboard four PSU TX10.

Today we have the honor to look at their brand new Focus Flow 120mm fan, the NF-F12 PWM. The Focus Flow 120mm (NF-F12 PWM) is a brand new Pulse Width Modulation fan which has vastly improved on Noctua's old designs with the brand new Focus Flow technology to improve airflow & static pressure. Likewise, Noctua did not stop there, and also implemented its brand new NE-FD1 PWM IC as well as the brand new SSO2 bearing.
Overall, you're looking at a fairly impressive fan, to say the least. Noctua has gone out of their way to beat the 2:1 Airflow to Noise ratio that's most common on 120mm fans, as well as have a fairly astute pressure rating with this fan as well. By all respects, this is definitely looking to be a performance part from Noctua's factories.
Back in 2009 Cooler Master released the CM Storm line of cases with gamers on the go in mind. The cases had a rugged look that had form and function as well as security features for peripherals with the StormGuard system. Today we are looking at the next addition to the Storm series, the Cooler Master Storm Trooper. Sorry Star Wars fan, this case is not what you think it is.

The Storm Trooper is a full tower chassis with gamers and enthusiasts in mind. For the gamer on the go the Storm Trooper has a carry handle on the top of the case. Unlike some handles I have seen in the past the Storm Trooper handle is part of the chassis frame, and it can support up to 95lbs or 43kg. Take out the 30lbs for the case itself you are left with 65lbs for your system.
The exterior of the Storm Trooper is not what most are thinking of when they hear the name. It’s all black and has rugged looks like all the Storm series cases. What is different from Storm cases thus far is the plastic portions of the case have a rubberized coating on them. To me, this is similar to the coating that is on BitFenix cases. The coating looks nice, and does protect the plastic somewhat.

To keep things cool the Storm Trooper comes with two front intake 120mm red LED fans, a top mounted 200mm fan and a rear 140mm fan. It still has room for two side 120mm fans and two bottom 120mm fans. Out of the box the front, top, and rear can be controlled by the integrated fan controller. The front 120mm LED fans can have the LEDs turned on or off via light controls on the front panel as well.

The Storm Trooper also has reconfigurable drive cages. The drive cage area is split into two groups of 4 and can be turned independently of one another to either be oriented side to side, front to back, or removed all together to make room for more 5.25” bay devices. The drive cages all have drive trays that are tool-less for 3.5” drives, but can have 2.5” drives mounted to them. There is also a secondary remote cage for just 2.5” drives on the bottom of the case that has room for 4 drives. If that wasn’t enough there is an external drive dock at the top of the case for 2.5” drives.
For the enthusiast, there is the ability to have two internally mounted 240mm radiators in the Storm Trooper with NO loss in main 3.5” drive bays. If you’re rocking air cooling you’re covered there, as well. The Storm Trooper can support CPU coolers up to 7.3” or 186mm and video cards up to 12.7” or 322mm. Now, I have yet to see a cooler that is 7” tall; it makes me wonder what Cooler Master has cooking.
